What LiveScope Actually Is
Garmin LiveScope is a forward-facing sonar system that gives you real-time, high-definition sonar images of what's in front of or below your boat — updated several times per second. Unlike traditional sonar, LiveScope shows you what fish are doing right now: swimming, hovering, rising, eating. It changed inshore fishing when it launched and has been refined significantly since.
Which Version Do You Need?

For South Florida inshore and nearshore fishing, the standard LiveScope or LiveScope Plus covers the vast majority of use cases. The XR is purpose-built for deep offshore and overkill for most inshore anglers.
Transducer Placement Is Everything
This is where most DIY installations go wrong. LiveScope's performance is exquisitely sensitive to transducer placement, angle, and rigidity.
Forward Mode Placement
The ideal tilt angle is typically 0–20 degrees below horizontal depending on depth and target species. Too steep and you're looking at the bottom; too flat and you lose bottom contact. Most installers start at 10–12 degrees and tune from there on the water.
Depth Below the Waterline
Position the transducer at least 6–8 inches below the waterline to avoid cavitation interference. On center consoles, a shallow-water pole mount on the trolling motor or a dedicated LiveScope pole is the standard approach.
Mount Options Explained
Trolling Motor Mount
The most popular option on bay boats. You can aim the transducer with the trolling motor head. Garmin makes dedicated mounts for Minn Kota and MotorGuide systems.
Dedicated Pole Mount
A rigid pole mounted to the gunwale with the transducer fixed at the bottom. Gives a stable, consistent aim point. Many South Florida inshore guides prefer this because the image is always consistently oriented.
Networking Into Your MFD
The GLS 10 black box communicates with your Garmin chartplotter via Garmin Marine Network (GMN) — a proprietary high-speed Ethernet connection. LiveScope does not run over NMEA 2000. You need an open Ethernet port on your MFD. On a fully-loaded network you may need a Garmin GMS 10 port expander.
Critical Settings After Install
- Gain — Start at auto, then tune manually once you understand the returns
- Range — Set to match the depth you're fishing; too much compresses the image
- Noise rejection — Increase if you're seeing background noise or false returns
- Transducer tilt — Fine-tune on the water until fish appear clearly without losing bottom contact
LiveScope in South Florida Waters
