Why Starlink for Boats?

For Bahamas crossings and offshore fishing: Maritime is the only plan that maintains reliable speeds in open ocean. Roam deprioritizes mobile users when the satellite is congested — which happens frequently offshore. If you're crossing the Gulf Stream, Maritime is the right plan.
Hardware Overview
The current Starlink maritime hardware is the flat-panel dish (also called the "flat high performance" dish). It's a rectangular panel approximately 20" × 12" that self-orients electronically — no moving parts, no mechanical actuator. This is a significant reliability improvement over the original round dish with its motorized mount. The flat panel connects to the Starlink router via a proprietary cable. Most marine installations replace the Starlink router with a dedicated marine router (Peplink, Ubiquiti) for better onboard network management.
Installation Requirements
Sky View
The flat panel requires an unobstructed 100-degree cone of sky view above the horizon. Obstructions — T-top legs, outriggers, antennas, radar domes — within that cone cause dropouts. Mounting location selection is the most critical part of a Starlink installation. On a typical center console, the T-top hardtop is usually the best location. On express cruisers and sportfishers, the flybridge hardtop or radar arch works well.
Mounting
The flat panel ships with a pipe mount adapter. Marine installations typically use a custom stainless or aluminum mount fabricated to the specific boat. The dish must be mounted level (within a few degrees) for optimal performance. Cable penetrations through the hardtop or deck require proper marine-grade fittings with sealant — a common failure point in DIY installations.
Power Considerations
The flat-panel dish draws 40–75W continuously depending on conditions (more in cold weather, less in warm South Florida conditions). The Starlink router adds another 15–25W. Total system draw: approximately 55–100W. On a boat with a 12V house bank, that's 4.5–8.5A continuous. This is manageable on most boats with a properly sized house bank and charging system, but it needs to be accounted for in your electrical budget — especially on boats that anchor out for extended periods.
We recommend a dedicated 15A circuit from the house bus for the Starlink system, fused at the bus with a 10A fuse.
Onboard Networking
The Starlink router is adequate for simple setups but lacks the features most boaters want: VLAN separation, cellular failover, bandwidth management, and remote monitoring. We typically install a Peplink Balance or Peplink MAX router in place of the Starlink router. Peplink's SpeedFusion technology allows seamless failover between Starlink and cellular (4G/5G) — so if Starlink drops in a marina with poor satellite view, the connection automatically switches to cellular without dropping your video call.
South Florida & Bahamas Use
- Inshore and ICW: Roam Regional works well at the dock and in protected waters. Speeds are good when the satellite isn't congested.
- Offshore fishing: Maritime plan recommended. Real-time weather routing (PredictWind, Passage Weather) works excellently with Starlink speeds.
- Bahamas crossing: Maritime plan required for reliable coverage. Coverage in the Bahamas is good on the Maritime plan; Roam coverage is inconsistent.
- Extended Bahamas stay: Maritime plan provides consistent coverage throughout the Bahamas island chain. Many liveaboards and extended cruisers consider it essential.
What to Expect
A properly installed Starlink Maritime system on a South Florida boat will deliver 80–200 Mbps download speeds in most offshore conditions, with latency suitable for video calls. Performance degrades in heavy rain (rain fade) and can be affected by satellite congestion in busy areas. It is not a replacement for VHF radio, radar, AIS, or any other safety system — it is a connectivity tool that makes offshore time more productive and comfortable, and that provides access to real-time weather data that can genuinely improve safety decisions.
