What a Thermal Camera Shows
A thermal (infrared) camera detects heat, not light. It creates an image from temperature differences between objects. On a boat, a thermal camera shows you: boats and ships (their engines and occupants glow against the cold water), people in the water (the most critical life-safety function โ a person overboard is extremely visible in thermal even in total darkness), crab traps and debris, navigational hazards, bird activity indicating baitfish concentrations, and engine room hot spots.
Thermal vs. Night Vision
Night vision amplifies available light โ moonlight, starlight. It produces detailed images but requires ambient light and can be overwhelmed by bright light sources. Thermal works in complete darkness, through light fog, through light rain, and doesn't wash out near bright lights. The tradeoff is that thermal images don't show surface detail like night vision does. For navigation and collision avoidance, thermal is clearly superior.

Current Systems Worth Considering
FLIR / Raymarine Thermal Cameras
FLIR makes the most widely used marine thermal cameras. The M-Series (M132, M232, M364) are gyro-stabilized with pan-and-tilt for larger vessels. The T-Series (T9, T10) are fixed-mount cameras at more accessible price points. Raymarine Axiom MFDs display FLIR thermal video natively via Ethernet โ the most seamless integration available.
Garmin GC 200 Marine Camera
Garmin's camera solution includes thermal capability in some configurations and integrates directly with Garmin chartplotters via the Garmin Marine Network.
MFD Integration
Modern thermal cameras connect to MFDs via Ethernet or HDMI. Key integration features: radar overlay capability (combines thermal image with radar returns), MOB position marking directly from the camera view, automatic gain control, and color palette selection (white-hot, black-hot, Ironbow). For Raymarine users, FLIR integration is native and requires no additional hardware. For Garmin users, the GC 200 integrates directly with any current GPSMAP chartplotter.
Mounting Considerations
Mount as high as possible โ the higher the camera, the greater the detection range. On a typical South Florida center console or express cruiser: T-top or hardtop (most common), or radar arch if equipped. Forward-looking mounting is ideal for navigation; forward-and-downward for person-overboard detection. Cable runs should be through weatherproof conduit with drip loops at every entry point.

Any boat that runs regularly at night or in low-light conditions โ early morning offshore fishing departures, overnight Bahamas crossings, or any serious cruising. The price of entry has dropped significantly. A FLIR T10 or equivalent properly installed is a meaningful safety investment at a fraction of the cost of the collision or MOB rescue it may one day prevent.
